How Long Does Ceramic Coating Last

There is no single answer, and anybody who gives you one without seeing the car is guessing. Coating durability depends on the product, how the surface was prepared, how the car is used and how it is washed.

What follows is how to think about it properly, and how to tell the difference between a coating that has genuinely worn and one that is simply dirty.

The Coating System

Different chemistries behave differently. Some are designed for hardness, some for hydrophobic behaviour, some for ease of maintenance. The written product documentation tells you what it was engineered to do.

Surface Preparation

This is the one most people underestimate. A coating bonds to whatever is on the panel at the moment of application. Polishing oils, residual wax or bonded contamination all compromise that bond, and no product overcomes bad preparation.

Application And Curing

Temperature, humidity and airflow all affect how a coating cures. This is why Vanta's studio in Epping is temperature and airflow controlled, so a coating cures in conditions that are actually managed rather than whatever the day brings.

Vehicle Exposure

A garaged weekend car and a daily driver parked under a tree in the Melbourne sun will not get the same life out of the same coating. Kilometres, parking and weather all count.

Washing And Maintenance

Correct washing extends the life of a coating. Automatic brush washes and harsh cleaners shorten it. This is the part entirely within your control.

It means the product performed to that standard under specific test conditions with correct preparation and maintenance. It is not a promise about your car in your driveway.

Treat headline durability figures as an indication of the product tier, not as a countdown clock.

Wash the car properly first. Then look for water still beading and sheeting off, dirt releasing without scrubbing, and the paint feeling slick rather than grabby. If those things are still happening, the coating is doing its job.

Weak beading on a dirty car tells you almost nothing. Traffic film sits on top of the coating and masks it completely.

• harsh or incompatible cleaners used repeatedly
• long gaps between washes so contamination bakes on
• bird droppings, sap or bug residue left too long
• abrasive polishing, which removes coating
• panel repairs or repainting after the coating went on

Compatible toppers can restore slickness and water behaviour and add a sacrificial layer. They do not reset the base coating to new. Some systems specify particular maintenance products, others do not, so follow the guidance for the coating actually on your car.

Abrasive machine polishing will reduce or remove a coating in the area polished. That is precisely why correction is completed before coating. If a panel is repaired or polished later, it needs preparing and coating again.

When a proper inspection after a proper wash shows it is no longer performing, when the paint has been corrected or repaired, or when you want to change protection systems. Not simply because the beading looked weaker on a dirty car in winter.
