What Car Detailing Does That A Car Wash Does Not
A car wash removes surface dirt. Detailing cleans, corrects and protects properly. Work out which one your car actually needs right now.

A wash makes a dirty car clean. A detail makes a clean car better than it has looked in years. They are not the same service and they are not competing, but people pay for one expecting the other constantly.

What Does A Normal Car Wash Do
It removes the loose dirt sitting on the surface. That is genuinely useful and it should happen regularly, because contamination left on paint does real damage over time.
What it does not do is touch anything bonded to the paint, address any defect in the clear coat, or meaningfully clean an interior.
What Extra Work Happens In A Detail
- chemical decontamination to lift iron fallout and tar
- mechanical decontamination for anything still bonded to the paint
- machine polishing to reduce swirls and lift gloss
- wheels, arches and shuts cleaned properly rather than sprayed past
- interior stripped back, vents, sills and seams included
- leather or fabric treated to suit the material
- protection applied so the work lasts
Does Detailing Remove Scratches And Stains
Many of them. Scratches within the clear coat come out with machine correction, and most interior staining responds to proper extraction. Scratches through to the base coat need paint, and some stains are permanent, particularly dye transfer on light leather.
A good detailer tells you which category yours falls into before you book.
When Is A Wash Enough
Most of the time. If the car has been detailed and protected and you are keeping it clean, a safe wash every week or two is exactly the right maintenance. Detailing is the reset, washing is the upkeep.
Is A Detail Worth Paying More For
It is worth it when the paint has visibly dulled, when the interior is beyond what a vacuum fixes, before applying any protection, or before selling. It is not worth it every few months on a car that gets washed properly.
Which Does Your Car Need
Look at the paint in direct sun and sit in the car with the doors open. If the paint looks hazy and the cabin smells like it needs more than a vacuum, that is a detail. If it just looks dirty, that is a wash. Send Vanta a couple of photos if you are unsure.
